For those that don't remember this is the frame in it's original condition:
The frame came to me last year from a seller in San Francisco. It was adorned with a lot of fancy decals or shadows of decals in the paint, so it may have been a race bike once upon a time. The frame was in very good structural condition, no rust to speak of. The paint while not completely gone was in a pretty sorry state. Since color matching the Grello is very difficult I had to wait until I could get my hands on another similar bike to use as a template. Fortunately a good friend picked one up recently and loaned it to me for this project. I think the results speak for themselves.
In my opinion the color is spot on and the finish is impeccable. Another fine job by the team at Spectrum Powderworks!!!
The build planned for the bike is a smattering of all the great stuff from back in the day. I wanted to approach what I considered a team like build or simply a high end racing build from back in the day. Although a lot of factory racers for Fat back in the late 80s and early 90s would have run Campagnolo components, I decided to opt for a more reliable build and went with Suntour XC-PRO. This is my first Suntour build and I'm pretty excited to take a detour from M900 land. Wheels and cranks are courtesy of Bullseye (NOS hubs with refinished cranks), brakes are Grafton Speedcontrollers, NOS Chris King headset and the rest a mix of XC-PRO with Dia Compe SS-5 brake levers. Grove Innovations Hammerhead bar/stem combo, a Sakae TCO and Turbo saddle round out the build.
So far the build is going smoothly, without any major headaches. Hope to have it done this weekend!!!
